Moral Of The Story: Generally Ashamed Edition

One day, I will have my shit together. Today is not that day.

I got an email last night from a potential client. In their email, they asked for the phone number for my home business. It was 3 in the morning. I was in a bad mood. I also might have thought I was emailing someone I know far better than this lovely person who might have paid for my children’s orthodontia. My husband, say. My response?

“It’s on the website.”

That’s it. That’s what I said. That was the full body of my email.

Moral of the Story?

Never listen to anything I say ever again.

  1. Awwwwwww. Sorry that this has been such a rough month! We still love you Naomi!

  2. Even the mightiest have their moments. Besides they probably read your blog, and will see this further proof of your humanity, and will therefore be even more likely to hire you, and your children will have properly aligned teeth for years to come.

  3. Yikes! Maybe you shouldn’t answer email at 3 a.m. :-) Sometimes we think someone needs a response right away but usually they can wait a few hours say until daybreak… I’m guessing you replied in the morning and apologized and sent them a link to your post about Zack…

  4. Huh? What’s wrong with that answer? You probably just saved yourself from a nightmare client. If they can’t figure that out, it’s only going to get worse. I can think of at least two clients who I should have answered similar to you, but didn’t. And I suffered oh so long for not chop-blocking them from the get-go. A few hurdles that prove basic intellectual ability might not be such a bad thing.

  5. I’ve recently been told that financial planning is a process, not an event. I think getting/having your shit together is in the same boat. I certainly hope so, or I’m in deep trouble ;-)

  6. Agreed on the nightmare client… better off without them… of course that makes me move up in line right?

    Life moves on.

    Keep on rocking.

  8. @ Amy - you’re totally the sweetest ever.

@ Reid - Here’s hopin’ re: the teeth. Personally, I think teeth are highly overrated. Puree that bitch, that’s what I say.

@ Aruni - I’d love to say the lesson has been learned, but frankly, I doubt it.

@ Lawrence - you have made my day. I think I will sticky your comment to my monitor.

    @ Tzaddi - God, I hope so.

@ Brandon - You’re totally up the list. Although I know another Brandon and when I saw the comment I thought, “Wait. Am I so messed up right now that I forgot you hired me?” Uh, no.

@ Dave - Refreshing and direct perspective, as always. “Whatever” also works but that doesn’t give the opportunity to use the word “Pffft”.

  9. Moral of the story is don’t email at 3:00 a.m., you dope.

Anyway, who wants clients who call you? I wish the phone could get uninvented.

Sonia Simone on December 21st, 2007
  10. Yep, that’s why I don’t answer email or usually even check it after 8pm or before 8am.

some other Naomi on December 22nd, 2007
  11. Nothing wrong with that email if you don’t want them to call you. I often tell people that my phone number is stashed under the 4th planterbox on center street by the corner of laurel across from the bagel store where you always see the crazy lady who yells all day long. Call me any time.

  12. The moral is everyone is human! Especially when working under a high stress load. (HUGS)

(The second moral is don’t email when tired… but if I did that I’m not sure when I’d email. :) )

  13. Hey am I the only one who noticed you didn’t cuss? I’m quite proud of you - I knew you were getting better. Thats my girl.

Gosh - why does everyone immediately come to the negative conclusion?

    shane on December 22nd, 2007
  14. It’s going to take considerably more than that to get me not to listen to what you say. And if you ever send me an email that makes me say ‘What???’…. I’ll check the timestamp.

    bill on December 22nd, 2007
  15. (((((HUGS))))) Naomi! I’m sorry for all the difficult times right now - I hope things look up real soon!

@Sonia - LOL I hate the phone too… I wish all clients preferred email… I always find it quicker and more convenient to send off an email than have to coordinate times that both parties are available, etc.

  16. Ooof, thats rather rough! But I’m glad you are not ashamed to tell others when you goof a bit. Just laugh, learn, and live past it. I know I’ve had those moments 100 times, and I’m sure you’ve had 1000 before :-)

    Just keep on truckin’!

Andrew Fleming on December 23rd, 2007
  17. Thanks for admitting that you are human so that we can all feel better about all the things we wish we had never done. :)

  18. The more I read your posts, the more I think you and I would get along just fine! :o)

  19. [...] was just reading a post on IttyBiz about those days where, for whatever reason, you just don’t want to deal with the customer. Maybe you didn’t get much sleep the night before, or maybe one of your customers just rubs [...]
