Reason I Have a Home Business, No. 32

Please read this one, guys. It’s important.

It would appear that people think I’m funny. Well, strangers think I’m funny. My family thinks I’m a pain in the ass. Maybe it’s like that for Seinfeld, too. I like to think so.

Anyway, the last few days have been exciting ones in IttyVille. Nataly from Work It, Mom! did an interview with me, and subsequently posted about me, and a bunch of other amazing women entrepreneurs and bloggers, on her own blog and on Huffington Post. Lylah did a post about me on her blog, as did Deb, and people are nominating me for Funniest Blog in the Performancing blog awards. Traffic’s up a smidgen. (That’s sarcasm, by the way. Thank God I paid my hosting this month.)

This is exciting stuff, and the pressure to perform is intense. Is this what men feel like? If so, on behalf of womankind, I apologize.

Anyway, today I knew I really had to knock one out. I had to be so funny it hurt. I had to be relevant and inspiring and topical. I was scared shitless, but I figured I could at least pull off mediocre.

Then my little nephew, who’s not the healthiest in the first place, was rushed to the hospital, the details of which I won’t bore you with. It’s thrown everyone for a loop, and it’s the third Christmas in a row that this part of the family has had a medical drama. Zack’s six and he only weighs 37 pounds. There’s not much of him there to fight anything in the first place. He’s a trooper, but it’s not a fun way to spend Christmas.

I know there are greater dramas in the world. I know children are starving in Asia and I know there’s genocide in Rwanda and Darfur’s a total trainwreck. But this little guy’s not in a great place and he’s close to home and it’s really f*cking me up. Thank God I don’t have to get off my ass and put pantyhose on and pretend I give a shit about work right now.

So if you’re the type of person who prays, please do. If not, maybe just send nice thoughts. And if you feel like giving Zack a shout-out in the comments, I think he’d really like that.

I promise I’ll go back to being funny and bitchy and caustic soon. If you’re new and looking for funny, people seem to like the story of how I had to have my husband cut my hand out of a box of wine with a bread knife.

  9. That totally sucks and I feel for you, Zack, and his family. This Christmas there have been a lot of “downers” around my family and work place, and I feel for everyone who is having a hard time.

So Zack, Merry Christmas. No matter what is going on this is the time of miracles and magic, and we are all pulling for you!

Oh, and Zack, please don’t read your Aunt’s blog - she uses way too many of the words that make me smile…

  16. [Naomi, there _is_ no greater drama than a sick child.]

Zack, I was sick a lot before I was seven, but I never had to go to the hospital right before Christmas! I hope they have lots of decorations, and I hope you get better soon. My dog, Stony, says that if I could sneak him into the hospital he would lick you and lick you until you got well enough to play with him.

    Hugs,

  17. Hi Zack - I hope you get better soon. Your aunt is awesome. Sending good vibes from Austin, Texas.

I can’t get the image of Naomi wearing pantyhose out of my head. Do people/women still wear pantyhose? Especially if they work at home? Makes no sense if you ask me. :-)

  23. Hey Zack, just writing because I heard you weren’t feeling so good. Nothing heels a body faster than a happy mind so just stay positive and focus on all of the great things that are going to happen in your life once you get past this. When you grow up you can do absolutely anything you want to do and change the world with your greatness! You see Zack, I was born with a disease and when I was a little boy people didn’t think I was going to live very long, but I never believed them. I knew that I was going to be OK and come out on top. Today I am 23 years old and I am as fit as a fiddle! I owe it all to thinking positively and taking care of my body with exercise and healthy foods.
Everybody here is thinking about you and we know you will be OK.

    Take care Zack!

  36. A message from my 7 year old daughter Cassady to Zack:

    Zack,
I hope you have a really great Christmas. I’m going to tell Santa that if you’re not home that he should take your presents to the hospital. One time when I went to the doctor I thought getting a shot was gonna hurt really bad but it didn’t. If you have to get a shot, don’t worry. Have a very good Christmas.

    Love,
    Cassady

A message from my 6 year old son Aidan to Zack:
