I keep a file of everything I'm working on RIGHT NOW on Backpack, which is a web-based notes & file storage thingy. You can also gmail them to yourself. I update the backup every time I work on stuff. (Also a good place to stash blog posts in progress, etc.) I also keep my client contact info in there, and any pending invoices.

If I am spirited to Moldavia by aliens in the middle of the night, I can go to the lone internet cafe and get work done.

Alas, careful with the portable USB stuff - they too fail, and in any case tend to get banged around a bit more than your average desktop and/or laptop.

What works for me is keeping my files locally, with an incremental externa USB/Firewire backup every night. If you add a layer of paranoia (what if the house burns down?), you will periodically (weekly?) copy your backup either to an online storage provider or physically burn to DVD and keep it elsewhere - with a friend, whatever.

Anyway, just wanted to pop in and say hi - recently found IttyBiz and am enjoying it thoroughly.

Hi Asako,

Thanks for coming by IttyBiz - it's great to have you. I think you make a great point about the portable hardware. I have a shiny new computer and I'm still terrified sometimes about what the mysteries of technology can do to my data.

Hello,

If I add another thing, keeping everything back-up in a portable hardware. These days, I do not use my hard disk on my PC that much, and instead use USB hardware. I started this habit, because my last PC was so un-reliable and failed so often. And I found not only I can keep my files accessible, but also I can keep my PC's memory free.

And you are absolutely right, nothing is so urgent. I have an experience of getting disappointed that the other party was not even paying attention if my stuff has been delivered or not.
