So I'm like, a year fucking late to the party or something like that. But someone just linked me to this, and I have to say... Yeah. Just... yeah. This one deserves another round of retweets and stumbles and shit.

Good one.

Whoa. I was poking around your site looking for articles for me mom to read as she's trying to open her own business. She's only told a handful of people, and she's received all of these reactions already.

This post is gold. I agree with Flora: "This should be required reading for all entrepreneurs."

I fully believe that most naysayers I know are just playing Devil's Advocate to protect me, and I've openly acknowledged and thanked them for it. (So I guess even if they were shooting me down for any of the other reasons, they still end up looking like the good guys, and I end up empowering myself with defending my idea again and again, sometimes even developing it further. Bonus!)

I also am part of the crowd that has always had a lot of encouragement, mostly in that I could go all the way to the end of school and get a Ph.D., blah blah blah. I'm really glad that people haven't been that annoyingly positive about my business ideas! This way, I get to be certain I'm doing what I really, really want before I move forward!

Anyways, I just had to speak up as a female Canadian who is not feeling the need to get external affirmations or to develop a support group. Though I do see what you mean about how society makes us think we should feel this... and maybe that's why I don't: I'm rebelling. Rawr.

The only role gender plays this is societal expectations - purely superficial. Men may hide their desire to be approved of better than women, but that's because it's 'expected' of them (us). And, consequently, if one does not hide this desire, the 'common' man - competitive, insecure and not all that thoughtful - takes this as a sign of weakness in another. This is to say that the (miserable) behavior above exists in a perpetuating circle of self-deception. There's simply too much unnecessary insecurity and too many others who buy into such dull and repressed personalities as the norm.
