So far we’ve covered a lot of ground on networking – why it’s more important than ever right now, why you need to choose one of the 3 networking camps, and which networking activities are best for each camp.
Today we’re going to look at how your network can grow with two different strategies – networking up and networking out.
I’ll walk you how each of them works, and give you my recommendations for what you should do moving forward.
In our previous post on the 3 types of networkers we covered the triad of networking camps:
- Fame Networkers, who primarily pursue visibility / reach for their work, brand or cause,
- Fortune Networkers, who primarily pursue leads that they can actively convert to customers or clients, and
- Fame And (Therefore) Fortune Networkers, who primarily pursue reputation-building and status as a means to customers or clients
As mentioned in the previous post, none of these camps are any better or worse than the other. But since they have different end goals, they need to use different approaches when they engage in networking activities.
So today we’re going to look at the best approaches you can use for whichever camp you’re in.
If you’ve read the opening post for this series on networking, you may have already started with your first bit of networking homework – making lists of your strong connections, weak connections, and “new” connections (the people you don’t know but want to meet).
This step alone can really open your eyes to how extensive your existing network may be. For most people, they’re more connected than they realize.
But now what should you start DOING re: networking?
As the coronavirus pandemic unfolds, and more and more businesses are feeling the impact of quarantine, isolation, and shelter-in-place orders, so many of the traditional channels of marketing and promotion have gone away.
This shift is massively reducing the incoming revenue of almost all businesses, big and small. Everyone is going to need to change up what they’re doing to adapt to this in order to keep the roof over not only their heads, but the heads of their business.
This is especially true at the ittybiz level – there’s no big bailouts for us, unfortunately. So we’re going to have to use every tool at our disposal to keep money flowing – even if it’s in smaller quantities than we’re used to.
This is where networking comes in – and for you, it matters now more than ever.
